Saving Bali’s Heritage

Bali News: Saving Bali’s Heritage

A team from United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is expected in Bali October 12-17, 2011 to review three locations nominated for World Heritage Status.

The World Heritage List is comprised of 936 sites around the world considered as having outstanding universal value.

During their 5-day visit the UNESCO team will visit and review three sites in Bali for possible elevation as UNESCO World Heritage Sites:

• The Pakerisan water catchment area of Gianyar
• The rice-field terraces of Jatiluwih in Tabanan
• Taman Ayung Tempe in Badung

The final determination by UNESCO will depend on the intrinsic quality of each site, the level of care and maintenance in place and the surrounding community’s commit to support the assessment process.

The findings of the survey team will be discussed at the UNESCO assembly to be held in June 2012.
